Nov 01, 2018

The goal of every dentist is to help keep your smile as healthy as possible. In case a problem comes up, here at Berkshire Family Dental in Washington, DC we work as hard as possible to provide you with the simplest, least invasive solution possible. There are times, however, despite all of our efforts to the contrary, that the best option for your oral health is tooth extraction.

If it becomes clear that tooth extraction is the only option, you can count on Dr. Grewal and Dr. Chehayeb to explain to you in detail the procedure and why they feel it is necessary. Read on to discover five common reasons for tooth extraction.

Reasons For Tooth Extractions

As you may already know, the most common reason for tooth extraction is decay or severe infection. There are other reasons your dentist may recommend extraction. Some of these are:

  • Dental Trauma– A tooth that has broken off below the gumline may be irreparable. Extracting would be the recommended treatment.
  • Alignment Issues– Overcrowding of the teeth or improper positioning could affect the position of surrounding teeth and require extraction.
  • Orthodontic Treatment– Some children need to have one or more teeth extraction to prepare the teeth for braces.
  • Preparation for Dentures– In order to prepare the mouth for full or partial dentures, tooth extraction may be required.
  • Wisdom Teeth– Wisdom teeth pose many potential problems for patients, such as impaction. As they are located to the back of the mouth they also are harder to clean and are therefore more prone to decay.
